Since ancient times, humans have looked to the animal kingdom for wisdom, protection, and guidance. In shamanic traditions, animals are not just beings we coexist with—they are sacred allies who walk beside us in spirit. These beings are called power animals or spirit animals, and they each bring unique medicine to our journey.
In this article, we explore what power animals are, how they show up in our lives, and how you can connect with yours for healing, strength, and clarity.
What is a Power Animal?
A power animal is a spiritual guide in animal form that offers protection, strength, and wisdom. Unlike symbolic or totemic animals (which might represent general traits), a power animal is uniquely connected to your soul, often appearing in dreams, meditations, or times of transformation.
Every culture has its own language for this:
In Andean shamanism: animal tutelar or “guardian spirit”
In Native American traditions: totem or medicine animal
In Nordic/Sámi traditions: fylgja (follower spirit)
Power animals can walk with you for a lifetime or appear during specific chapters when you need their medicine.
What Do Power Animals Do?
Power animals help us:
Reclaim lost energy or soul fragments
Navigate fear, grief, or confusion
Step into our power or purpose
Set boundaries or make life changes
Tap into intuition and inner guidance
They can appear in dreams, synchronicities (like seeing the same animal everywhere), shamanic journeys, or deep meditation.
Some people even find that a childhood fascination with a specific animal was actually their guide showing up early on.
Common Power Animal Meanings
🦅 Eagle – Higher perspective, vision, spiritual messages
🐺 Wolf – Loyalty, instinct, tribe, freedom
🐍 Snake – Transformation, healing, kundalini energy
🦋 Butterfly – Rebirth, softness, surrender to change
🐻 Bear – Strength, introspection, grounding
🦉 Owl – Wisdom, shadow sight, truth-telling
🦌 Deer – Gentleness, innocence, heart-led living
But remember—your power animal’s meaning is personal. It’s not just what the books say, but what you feel when it comes close.
How to Find Your Power Animal
Here are 3 ways to discover your animal ally:
1. Shamanic Journey
A guided journey with a drum or rattle can help you travel to the Lower World where your power animal may reveal itself. This is how I work with clients—and it’s one of the most powerful methods.
2. Dream Work
Pay attention to recurring animals in your dreams. What are they doing? How do they make you feel?
3. Synchronicity & Symbolism
Are you seeing the same animal in books, logos, or nature over and over again? Spirit uses repetition to get our attention.
My Work with Power Animals
In my sessions, I help clients retrieve their power animals—especially after soul loss, trauma, or energetic depletion.
Sometimes, these allies return after many years of being forgotten—and when they do, people often feel an immediate shift in energy and inner strength.
You might also receive a song, a message, or even a movement from your animal—a unique transmission only for you.
