The beat of the drum is one of the most ancient tools in shamanism—used not for entertainment, but for transformation.
Shamanic journeying is the art of traveling between worlds to receive wisdom, healing, or guidance, and the drum acts as your vessel. With each steady beat, the veils between realities thin—and you begin to remember how to listen.
In this guide, you’ll learn what shamanic journeying is, how to do it, and why the drum is such a powerful ally on your spiritual path.
What is a Shamanic Journey?
A shamanic journey is a conscious, intentional entry into non-ordinary reality—also called the spirit world. It is done through an altered state of consciousness, most often induced by the repetitive rhythm of the drum or rattle.
Unlike dreaming or visualizing, journeying is a real energetic experience. You don’t imagine it—it comes to you. You travel to one of the three worlds:
🌍 Lower World – Earth-based realm of power animals, ancestors, and healing roots
🌌 Upper World – Celestial realm of guides, angels, and higher self wisdom
🌿 Middle World – Spirit version of our current world, where timelines and energetic imprints live
Why the Drum?
The drumbeat mimics the heartbeat of the Earth—slow, deep, and steady. It entrains the brain into a theta state (4–7 Hz), the same state accessed during deep meditation or REM sleep. In this state, your conscious mind relaxes and your inner vision opens.
Other tools like rattles, singing bowls, or flutes can also be used—but the drum is the most commonly used journeying ally in shamanism around the world.
How to Journey: A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Prepare Your Space
Create a quiet, undisturbed environment
Light a candle or burn sacred herbs (e.g., palo santo, sage, or your favorite incense from our shop)
Set a clear intention: “Show me my power animal” or “I seek clarity on…”
Step 2: Lie Down & Cover Your Eyes
Use a scarf or eye mask to remove external light—this helps your third eye open more easily.
Step 3: Begin the Drumbeat
Use a recorded journey track or drum live. Aim for 4–7 beats per second, consistent and unbroken for 10–15 minutes.
Step 4: Enter the Journey
Visualize yourself entering through a portal: a hollow tree, a cave, a tunnel, or even a crack in the Earth. Allow yourself to be pulled in. What do you see? Feel? Hear? Trust it.
Step 5: Receive Messages
Let the journey unfold. You may meet an animal, guide, or simply feel sensations. Stay open and curious.
Step 6: Return with Gratitude
When the drumming ends (or you hear the callback rhythm), retrace your steps and return. Open your eyes slowly. Drink water. Journal what came through.
Common First-Time Experiences
Vivid colors or landscapes
Power animals or guides appearing
A sense of floating or flying
Feelings of deep peace, grief release, or insight
Even if “nothing happens,” trust the process. You’ve planted a seed.
Deepening Your Practice
The more you journey, the more fluent your inner language becomes. Some people receive visions, songs, or clear answers. Others receive subtle impressions that make sense later.
Over time, you may build deep relationships with your guides, and even journey on behalf of others—a sacred gift in the path of service.

The drum is more than a sound—it’s a bridge.
When you surrender to its rhythm, you remember that the answers you seek don’t live outside you.
They live in the land beneath your feet, the breath in your chest, and the ancestors who walk with you—always.
