How to Use Rapé Safely and Respectfully in Ceremony

Rapé (pronounced ha-peh or rah-peh) is more than just a plant snuff—it is a sacred Amazonian medicine prepared and shared in ceremony for healing, clarity, and connection. Approaching rapé with respect and intention is key to receiving its gifts while honoring the Indigenous wisdom it comes from.

The Sacred Application of Rapé

Traditionally, rapé is applied through two tools:

  • Kuripe – a V-shaped self-applicator that allows you to blow rapé into your own nostrils.

  • Tepi – a longer applicator used by another person (often a shaman or practitioner) to blow rapé into the nostrils of the receiver.

In Amazonian tradition, the act of blowing rapé is sacred: the breath carries prayer, healing, and intention, transmitting the medicine directly into the body, mind, and spirit.

Left and Right – Feminine and Masculine

When applying rapé, it is customary to begin with the left nostril and then the right:

  • Left side (feminine) – represents the intuitive, receptive, and emotional aspects of being. Starting with the left nostril invites cleansing and connection to the feminine principle within.

  • Right side (masculine) – represents action, structure, and the rational mind. Applying to the right nostril balances the process, activating clarity and strength.

This order honors the sacred union of feminine and masculine energies, helping you find inner harmony.

Setting Your Intention

Before taking rapé, it is important to pause and create a ceremonial space. This doesn’t need to be elaborate—simply lighting a candle, saying a prayer, or connecting with your breath can shift the moment from casual use to sacred ritual.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I want to release?

  • What guidance am I seeking?

  • What energy do I want to call in?

Holding this intention as you receive rapé helps align the medicine with your personal healing journey.

How to Use Rapé Safely

  1. Choose your space wisely – Find a calm and quiet environment where you feel safe.

  2. Sit upright and grounded – Keep your spine straight to support energy flow.

  3. Apply first to the left nostril, then the right – honoring feminine and masculine balance.

  4. Receive the rapé mindfully – Whether through kuripe or tepi, breathe deeply and allow the medicine to settle.

  5. Allow the process – Rapé may cause release through tears, mucus, or yawns—this is part of the cleansing.

  6. Rest and integrate – Take time afterwards for meditation, prayer, or simply being present.

Important Safety Notes

  • Rapé is not for internal use—it should never be swallowed or ingested.

  • Avoid using rapé if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or dealing with serious respiratory conditions.

  • Always source rapé from authentic Indigenous makers to ensure purity and respect for the traditions.
